Examples from Shao Weihua 邵偉華 《周易預測例題解》

1. Run-aways

一九八六年四月，我單位有六個學生因受了老師的批評集體逃走。一連三天，家長和校方、單位都派人到處找，結果都未找著，急得家長們，特別是爺爺奶奶哭哭啼啼。有的家長急得不行，最後找到我這裹，請求我預測孩子們的有關信息。根據孩子們的出走時間，我當時起卦，得(坤)之(剝)卦。
In April 1986 six students from the school in my unit ran away because they were criticized by their teacher. Three days had passed; the parents, school authorities and people from the unit had searched everywhere but did not find them. The parents were very worried; especially the grandparents were very much upset. Some parents were so much worried that they came to me to ask me if I could give news about the children. On the basis of the date and time when the children ran away I threw a hexagram; I got 坤 (2), changing into 剝 (23).

我看了卦後對孩子的家長講，當天來找我測就好了。1，孩子們當天沒有離開工廠，在東北方向活動，是第二天才走的，去西南方向; 2，孩子在外平安，有人幫助，餓不著; 3，今天下午(癸亥日)三點至七點，孩子們不回來就有消息; 4，陽曆5月23日以前一定會回來。
After I looked at the hexagram I told the parents that it was good to come to me for advice.
1. When the children ran away they did not leave the factory, they stayed in the northeast direction; only the second day they left in southwest direction;
2. The children are safe, there are people helping them, they have enough to eat;
3. Today in the afternoon (day 癸 (J) 亥 (12)) between 3 o'clock and 7 o'clock the children will not return, they will be taking a rest;
4. Before 23 May the children definitely will be able to return.
當天下午六點多鐘，有人來家告知，說在西安的鐘樓(我單位的西南方)，看到過那些孩子，只是不知孩子們是出走的。即日，六個孩子都回來了。一問，孩子們說當天沒有走，是在東北方活動。一切如我所測。
That day, after six o'clock some people came to my house to inform me that they went to look for the children at the bell tower of Xi'an (this is the southwest region of my unit), not knowing that the children already has left that place. But the next day the children returned. We asked if the day that they ran away they did not leave the factory immediately but stayed in the northeast region. Everything was as I had predicted.

解坤)為土為靜，故當天沒有走。用(坤)變(艮),(艮)為東北。子孫酉金變寅木，也是東北，坤為西南也。酉金為用神，居原神(坤)、(艮)卦之土上而得人之助，(坤)為五穀之味，有吃的，餓不著，當然平安。十一日是癸亥日，亥水沖起父母巳火，父母為書信。下午三點到七點為申、酉時，金旺生水，水旺沖動父母巳火，沖其必動，父母爻動主信至。陽曆5月20日(陰曆四月十二日甲子日)回者，為卦中巳酉丑合子孫局，十一日亥水沖去巳火，十二日子水合去丑土，酉金無合，於卯時沖動酉金而回。
Explanation: Kun 坤 belongs to the wuxing Earth, which is still, quiet; therefore they did not move on the first day. The trigram Kun 坤 changes into Gen 艮, which belongs to the northeast. The liuqin Children 酉 (10) 金 (M) changes into 寅 (3) 木 (Wo), this is also the northeast, Kun 坤 belongs to the southwest. 酉 (10) 金 (M) is the yongshen, it resides in Kun 坤 and Gen 艮 wuxing's Earth (which are) yuanshen-trigrams① and therefore there is help from other people. Kun 坤 belongs to one of the five cereals②, there is food, they have enough to eat, certainly they are safe. The eleventh day is 亥 (12), 亥 (12) 水 (Wa) clashes with Parent line 巳 (6) 火 (F), Parents means messages. Three o'clock to seven o'clock in the afternoon are the hours 申 (9) and 酉 (10)③, Metal prospers and gives birth to Water, Water prospers④ and clashes with the moving⑤ Parents line 巳 (6) 火 (F), it clashes therefore it must move; the Parents line moving means information will be delivered. 20 May (lunar calendar 4th month, day 12 甲子 (1) ) the children will return because the 巳 (6), 酉 (10), and 丑 (2) lines in the hexagram form a 子孫合局 Children State of Triple Change⑥, the eleventh day 亥 (12) 水 (Wa) clashes with (Parent line) 巳 (6) 火 (F), the twelfth day 子 (1) 水 (Wa) combines with 丑 (2) 土 (E), 酉 (10) 金 (M) does not have a combination, at hour 卯 (4)⑦ there is a clash with moving line 酉 (10) 金 (M) therefore they will return at that time.

INTERMEZZO
The liushen 六神, the 'Six Spirits', also called liushou六獸 'Six Animals', are six important star constellations in the Chinese sky. They play an important role in Daoism, and have found their way in the wenwanggua system, where each has its own specific function. Their names are:
白虎 Baihu White Tiger (WT)
螣蛇 Tengshe Flying Serpent (FS)
鉤陳 Gouchen Polaris (P)
朱雀 Zhuque Vermilion Bird (
青龍 Qinglong Green Dragon (GD)
玄武 Xuanwu Black Tortoise (BT)
六神主事 (from 邵偉華 《周易與頂測學》, p. 170):
Liushen main affairs:
青龍主吉慶之事，但克世克用神，定是樂中生悲之凶。
The Green Dragon masters auspicious and happy events, but when it conquers the shi 世line or the yongshen 用神 there is trouble of grieve amidst happiness.
朱雀主口舌官非。
The Vermilion Bird masters quarrels and errors in government.
勾陳憂田土，牢役。
Polaris (masters) worries about cultivated fields, prisons and battles.
螣蛇主虛驚怪異之事。
Flying Serpent masters affairs of false alarms, and strange phenomena.
白虎主凶傷孝服。
The White Tiger masters bad luck, injuries and mourning periods.
玄武為匪盜暗昧之事。
The Black Tortoise is for bandits and clandestine affairs.
The liushen are linked to the lines of a hexagram. Which Spirit is linked to which line is decided by the Stem of the day:
六神作為預測時參考之用，卦有吉者，逢青龍而更吉;卦之凶者，逢虎蛇而更凶。
When the liushen are consulted for a prediction they work as follows: if the hexagram is auspicious, having the Green Dragon (moving) makes it more auspicious; if the hexagram is unlucky, having the Dragon or Snake (moving) makes it more unlucky.

2. Predicting an earthquake

社會上又颳起了西安要地震之風，故搖卦。得(復)之(明夷)卦:
Society wants to know if Xi'an will be stirred up by earthquakes, therefore I cast a hexagram. I cast 復 (24) changing to 明夷 (36):

Will there be an earth quake in Xi’an, China? Dated Tossed: June 19, 1988

Powerful Bcn destruction star, supported by purely fire month and date, moves and kills the wealth (landed properties) stars G. Property stars Gh and Gt are extremely weak or rather close to be annihilated. Although self line turns to R the winner star, yet without the support of G, the winner R is no winner at all.


l，有地震復)為(坤)宮之卦，(震)下(坤)上，(震)為木，(坤)為土，(震)為雷，又臨動爻，是雷動地下，地震之兆無疑。這是其一。其二，卦中雖蛇鬼爻都安靜，本沒有地震，但三爻辰土臨太歲。太歲宜靜不宜動，動即有震動之患。辰屬龍，龍為大蛇，龍動(坤)宮而臨(震)卦，實為地震之象。
1. Will there be an Earthquake: 復 (24) belongs to the Palace of 坤 (2), Zhen 震 below and Kun 坤 above, Zhen 震 is Wood, Kun 坤 is Earth, Zhen 震 is thunder, it is also encloses the moving line, this is thunder moving in the earth, this is beyond doubt an omen for an earthquake. This is the first (sign). Second, although both the Snake 蛇 and Ghost 鬼 lines are at ease, which originally means there will not be an earthquake①, the third moving line 辰 (5) 土 (E) is in Tai Sui 太歲 (the year is 辰 (5)). A non-moving year is good, when it moves it is not good, moving means the distress of (earth) quakes.
2，地震方位坤)為體，(震)木為用，是木克土，用克體。(坤)為西南，故地震在西安的西南方。
2. Location of the earthquake: trigram Kun 坤 is the ti 體, trigram Zhen震 is the yong 用; Wood overcomes Earth, (in other words) the yonggua overcomes the tigua. Kun 坤 is the southwest, therefore the earthquake will take place in the region southwest of Xi'an.
3，震級:卦臨日月旺地，震級必大。主變卦數23，但決不是23級，(坤)為 8，故取(坤)之數。因此，地震在八級左右。
3. Magnitude: The hexagram's wuxing is the same as the day and the month, it prospers. The magnitude most therefore be big. The number of the zhugua 主卦 and the biangua 變卦 is 23, but an earthquake can

never have magnitude 23. Kun 坤 is 8, therefore we take the number of Kun 坤. Thus the magnitude of the earthquake will be around eight.
4,地震時間:辰土為太歲之爻，動而沖日建戌土，戌為九月之建，故地震時問在八八年陰曆九月。所以，我的預測記錄上，九月地震的幾個可能的時間是:九月初五、初六、十七、十八、二十三、二十八、二十九日。
4. Time of the earthquake: 辰 (5) 土 (E) is the line of the year, it moves and clashes with the day 戌 (11)土 (E), 戌 (11) is the Branch of the ninth month; therefore the earthquake will take place in 1988 in the ninth (lunar) month. I noted in my prediction records possible dates for the earthquake in the ninth month: day 5, 6, 17, 18, 23, 28 or day 29.
應驗情況: 88年11月7日、8日，正是農曆九月二十八、二十九日，雲南省發生七級以上地震。九月二十八日未時交十月令，而地震是在交令前的辰時發生了，正應九月辰戌相沖。應二十八、二十九日者，正是震木逢寅卯日令旺地是也。
What happened: At 7 and 8 November 1988, this is the twenty-eighth and twenty-ninth day of the ninth month in the lunar calendar, Yunnan province suffered an earthquake with a magnitude greater than 7. At day 28 of the ninth month, time 未 (8) (1-3 pm) the 10th month is met, the earthquake started at time 辰 (5) (7-9 am) before the 10th month, this corresponds with the 9th month 戌 (11) clashing with 辰 (5). Looking back at day 28 and 29, this is exactly 震木 (Wo) meeting days 寅 (3) and 卯 (4)①, making Wood indeed prosper.

Magnitude 7.3. Three events about 9 seconds apart. Seven hundred thirty people killed, 3,900 injured, 267,000 homeless, 29 reservoirs severely damaged and 67 percent of the public buildings destroyed in the Lancang-Menglian area, China. About 3.2 million people in China were affected by the quake. Several highways were cut or covered by mudslides and damage occurred in large parts of south-western Yunnan Province, China. Felt strongly throughout Yunnan Province. A number of aftershocks were felt throughout the province. Damage in the Chiang Rai area, Thailand. Also felt at Lashio, Burma and Bangkok, Thailand.

3. Indeed a famous writer


1985 年 7月，我的一位好友滿某，知我學易，研究預測，特拿來一個人的出生時間請我預測。找當即把其出生時間裝入卦中，得(中孚)之(益)卦。
In July 1985 a good friend of mine named Man 滿, who knew I study the Yi and do research in predictions, gave me the time of someone's birth and asked me to do a prediction (about him). I immediately turned his time of birth into a hexagram①, I got 中孚 (61) turning into 益 (42).

What is this person fortune? Is he a famous writer?

(中孚)屬(艮)宮之卦，臨年月日時之建，實為卦旺身旺。我首先從文上對老滿說:「第一，此人必文才出眾，如入文途，定名聲大震;第二，此人在一九六五年，文上定有平步登雲之喜...。」老滿聽我講完後，按捺不住的激動和驚奇:「幾年未見，沒想到你竟如此妙算，你所講的他好的方面及挫折方面的事，猶如親眼所見，了如指掌。此人你不認識，他是全國著名作家王XX。他原來是工人，一九六五年五月一日在中國南海受到周恩來總理等黨和國家領導人的親切接見，確實是平步登雲。」
中孚 (61) belongs to the Palace of 艮 (51), the wuxing of this hexagram is the same as that of the year, month and date, this makes it a prosperous hexagram and therefore a prosperous person. Starting with literature I said, "First, this person must be an outstanding literary talent, if he engages in literature he will have a famous name and reputation with great effects; second, in 1965 his literary career will enjoy a meteoric rise....". Old friend Man listened to this and when I finished speaking he replied excited and surprised, "I have not seen you for some years and I did not expect you were so good with these calculations; every aspect of what you said is correct, as if you have seen this person with your own eyes, you know him like the palm of your hand. You do not personally know this person; it is the famous writer Wang XX. Originally he is a worker, but on May 1st 1965 he was given a rank in the political party by Zhou Enlai and the leaders of the country cordially received him. Truly a meteoric rise."
解:世爻未土臨月日建旺地，雖值月破，但九五君爻巳火生之，實為身旺。卦中官鬼卯木臨旺地而生父母巳火。父母爻為文書，兩重生世，又朱雀臨世生身，實為文才出眾，有名之象。六五年文上定有平步登雲之喜:六五是乙巳年，為九五君爻值太歲。五爻太歲生世，平步登雲主見天子。因此，受到中央領導接見。

Explanation: The shi line 未土 has the same wuxing as the month and day, it is prospering. Although it also ruins the month①, it is produced by the Ruler line 9 at 5 巳 (6) 火 (F), this really makes this person prospering. The Official & Ghost 卯 (4) 木 (Wo) is close to prospering and gives birth to the Parents Line 巳火. The Parents Line stands for documents and official correspondence; the two of them produce the shi line, also the Vermilion Bird is at the position of the shi, truly his literary talent is outstanding, it is the image of fame. in 1965 his literary career will enjoy a meteoric rise: 1965 is 乙 ( 巳 (6), the Ruler line 9 at 5 coincides with the year. The fifth line and the year produce the shi line, his fast rise will have to do with seeing the emperor. Therefore the authorities and leaders will receive him.

4. Tomorrow you will definitely find it

八五年二月，我單位趙某說:中午下班把自行車放在家門口，下午一點上班時，發現車子不見了，到處找無結果，測能找回否?得(坎)之(比)卦。
In Februari 1985 a man named Zhao came to me saying: "At noon I came from work and parked my car in front of the main gate of my house. When I wanted to go back to work at one o'clock my car had disappeared. I searched everywhere but could not find it. Can you foresee if I will get it back?" I got 坎 (29) changing to 比 (8).

Will I find my lost car?. Date tossed: Feb 2nd 1985

I don’t see how the lost car can be found tomorrow at day h, unless I reason that the strike loose line 2 will regain it strength at hour s. That is the only possibility for the line to move at that hour.


"不用急，車子明天下午申時定會找到。" 趙聽後高興地上班去了，第二天下午四點鐘(申時)，果然在路邊找到了車子。
"Do not worry, your car will be found tomorrow at hour shen 申 (3-5 pm) in the afternoon." When Zhao heard this he gladly went back to work . The second day at 4 o'clock his car was found at the side of the road, as expected.
解坎)為車，父母申金為用神，用神臨日建而生世，妻財午火又化子孫卯木回頭生，是不失之象。卦中官鬼辰土動是人偷，第二天酉金之日，辰與酉合化金臨用神，生世爻子水，也是不失之象。
第二天申時回者:第二天是酉金日，是酉金生(坎)卦，又用神帝旺而生世爻。此為大象得生，世爻得生，這是其一。來人站著問卦，故以主卦之數加動爻之數，是十四數，初二的下午二點半到第二天下午四點半正好是十四個時辰，而且第二天又遇酉日申時。所以，定為第二天申時找到車子。

Explanation: Kan 坎 (29) covers vehicles, The Parents Line 申 (9) 金 (M) is the yongshen, the yongshen is the same as the day and produces the shi Line, moreover the Wife & Wealth Line 午 (7) 火 (F) changes into Children 卯 (4) 木 (Wo) which in return produces it, this is the image of not losing something. The Offical & Ghost Line 辰 (5) 土 (E) moving means a person stealing. Day two is 酉 (10) 金 (M), 辰 (5) and 酉 (10) combine resulting in Metal①, which is the yongshen, it produces the shi line 子 (1) 水 (Wa), this too is the image of something that is not lost.
The second day at time shen 申 (9) it will return: The second day is 酉 (10) 金 (M), 酉 (10 )金 (M) produces the received hexagram Kan 坎 (29), moreover the yongshen is prosperous (on this day)② and produces the shi line. The hexagram itself is produced, and the shi line is produced - these are the first clues. The person who came was standing when consulting the oracle, therefore I added the number of the hexagram③ to the number of the moving line, the result is 14. From half past two on this day to tomorrow half past four in the afternoon is exactly 14 (double-)hours, furthermore the second day also has a meeting of day 酉 and hour 申④. Therefore the car will be found at the second day in hour shen 申.

5. Will Beijing suffer from a flood?

1987年5月4日，我在北京時，學員丁肖肖和其母拿看當時的一張報紙對我說:"報紙上說，今年北京夏秋之際有大水災，要求加強防洪。邵老師，你測一測，北京到底有水災否?"
On 4 May 1987 when I was in Beijing one of my students and his mother come to me with a newspaper. They said, "The newspaper says that Beijing will suffer a flood this year and that we should reinforce our flood prevention. Master Shao, can you predict if Beijing really will have a flood?"

當時搖得(艮)之(坤)卦.
卦中(坤)(艮)之土，既得月建生，又臨日建，為一片旺土克水象。我當時講:"今年北京市決無水災之患." 事後證明，確實沒有發生水災.
I threw the coins and got Gen 艮 (52) changing into Kun 坤 (2).
The wuxing Earth of Gen 艮 and Kun 坤 is vested by the month which produces it, it also is the wuxing of the day. In one piece we have the picture of prosperous Earth, which destroys Water. I said: "You do not have to worry about a flood in Beijing this year". Afterwards the facts proved that Beijing did not have a flood.
